Baby Lock Adhesive Not Sticking? Surface Prep, the 24-Hour Bond, Tricky Surfaces and Re-Mounting a Lock That Came Off
Lock or strap adhesive not sticking? Check the clean, dry surface, the firm press and the 24-hour wait, then re-mount a magnetic lock with the kit’s screws.
If your baby lock adhesive is not sticking, or a lock or strap came off, check three things: a clean, dry surface, a firm press, and time. The strap install video shows the first two, and the lock install video shows the cleaning and drying. The Magnetic Safety Lock Kit and Adjustable Safety Strap Lock pages give the third: "For best results allow 24 hours for the adhesive to fully bond onto the surface."
The kit also has a second way to mount. Its product page says each lock can be secured with the 3M adhesives or screwed in.
If a lock or strap will not stick or came off, try these steps in order:
Try these in order
-
Stop using it there
Each product page says “Please STOP using immediately if this product becomes faulty.” -
Move the contents out of reach
Move any medicine, cleaning or laundry products the cabinet holds out of sight and reach until it is fixed, as the AAP advises. -
Check the surface
Check the surface was cleaned and dried first, as both install videos show. -
Check each part was pressed on
Strap ends pressed on firmly; the lock secured by closing and reopening the door. -
Allow 24 hours
Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to fully bond, for best results, before you count on it against a pull. -
Re-mount with screws
Re-mount a magnetic lock with the kit’s screws, following the kit’s instructions. -

Why Baby Lock Adhesive Is Not Sticking: The 24-Hour Bond
The install videos check the lock or strap straight after fitting it. The lock and strap product pages say to allow 24 hours for the adhesive to fully bond, for best results. Wait that long before using an adhesive child lock against a pull.
Picture this: you press a strap on, tug the drawer once, and an hour later a toddler is tugging at that same drawer. The 24 hours have not passed yet. Give the bond its time before the lock has to work.
The oven lock and corner protector pages state no wait. If you want one, ask support rather than guessing.

Magnetic Cabinet Lock Fell Off: What the Video Shows and the Screw Option
Start with the adhesive mount as the lock install video shows it. The video cleans and dries the inside of the cabinet door and the cabinet frame. Then it peels off two adhesive stickers. Closing and reopening the door secures the lock in place.
The help page on how to install magnetic cabinet locks gives the full adhesive steps.
If the child lock adhesive came off, the kit’s other mount is screws. The product page says the locks can be screwed in and lists 24 screws in the extras. The install video does not show a screw mount, so follow the kit’s instructions for it.
Reuse 3M Adhesive on a Child Lock or Reposition It?
The product pages do not say an adhesive pad can be stuck down a second time. They do not list replacement adhesive pads either. To reposition an adhesive cabinet lock, use the kit’s screws, or contact Baby Proof Me support with your question. The separate removal guide covers taking off adhesive cabinet locks.

Child Safety Strap Not Sticking: When a Strap End Comes Off
If a baby proof strap fell off a drawer or door, go back to the strap install video. It cleans and dries both spots where the ends will stick. Then it removes the adhesive backing on both ends and presses each end firmly onto its surface.
The video pulls the drawer straight after. The strap lock adhesive needs time too. The product page says to allow 24 hours for the adhesive to fully bond, for best results.
The strap’s page says it "does not require any screws", which puts it among no-drill cabinet locks. The pages give no way to re-stick a strap end. If an end lets go, stop using that strap there, as its warning says, and contact Baby Proof Me support.
Baby Proof Textured Cabinets, a Stainless Steel Fridge and Other Tricky Surfaces
The product pages do not name textured, matte, freshly painted, curved or stainless steel surfaces. The strap’s page lists refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, ovens, toilet seats, trash cans and tool sheds among its uses. It does not say which fridge doors or finishes suit it. The strap video shows only a drawer and a pair of cabinet doors.
So answer by method. For child locks for textured cabinets, adhesive locks on painted cabinets, or any other finish, check three things:
- The spot is clean and dry.
- Each end can be pressed firmly onto it, as the strap video shows.
- It passes the pull check after 24 hours.
For a strap lock on a curved surface, ask whether each end truly presses on firmly. Ask the same for a child lock on a stainless steel fridge door. If an end cannot be pressed firmly onto a curved or stainless steel door, ask Baby Proof Me support before you rely on it. If a magnetic lock’s adhesive will not hold on your cabinet, the kit’s screws are its other mount.
Adhesive in a Garage or Shed
No Baby Proof Me product page gives a temperature range for its adhesive. The strap’s page names tool sheds among its uses but says nothing about cold or heat. Ask Baby Proof Me support before you rely on adhesive in an unheated garage or shed.
Check the Fix and Keep the Keys Away
After any fix, and after the 24 hours, test each lock or strap. Close the door or drawer all the way and try to pull it open. Then open it the way it is meant to open, as the install videos show: the magnetic key at the positioning sticker for a lock, or sliding the smart release tab for a strap.
CPSC’s Childproofing Your Home guide says safety devices "must be properly installed and reengaged after use" to be effective. It says "Follow installation instructions carefully" and advises locks "sturdy enough to withstand pulls and tugs from children." CPSC also says no device is fully childproof.
The AAP says safety latches that automatically lock when you close a cabinet door can help keep children away from dangerous products, "but there is always a chance the device will malfunction or the child will defeat it." Each product page warns that the product "is not a substitute for adult supervision." While a lock is being fixed, keep dangerous products out of reach. The wider guide to baby-proofing cabinets covers the rest of your cabinets.
While a magnetic lock is off or being re-mounted, keep the magnetic keys where children cannot see or reach them. A key opens the locks, and the keys are magnets. CPSC says "Keep small magnets away from children."
CPSC says "If you suspect magnets have been swallowed: Seek immediate medical attention". Call 911, or Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 (America’s Poison Centers).
