How to Install Baby Proof Me Magnetic Locks on Cabinet Doors and Drawers (Adhesive or Screws)
Install Baby Proof Me magnetic locks inside cabinet doors and drawers with 3M adhesive or screws, check that each lock holds, and see what to do if one won’t stay locked.
The steps follow Baby Proof Me’s install video. Read through the steps once before you peel any adhesive.
Kit Sizes, Measurements and Parts
The Magnetic Safety Lock Kit comes in four sizes. The table below gives the product page’s figures, including the extras listed for the 12-lock kit.
The product page describes a 12-lock, 3-key kit and gives no extras counts for the other sizes. It does not say whether the extras change, so count the parts in your box before you start.
The video also names the latch. Here is what the parts do in the install:
- The lock goes into the installation cradle while you attach the latch, and the cradle comes off near the end.
- The latch sticks under the cabinet’s top frame.
- Pushing the lock tab down turns lock mode on.
- A clear positioning sticker goes on the outside of the door to mark where the latch area is.

Where the Lock and Latch Go
Magnetic lock placement follows the install video. The latch goes under the cabinet’s top frame, flush with the front edge, so it touches the door when the door is closed. After you close and reopen the door, the lock sits on the inside of the door near its top corner.
If you are working out where to place a magnetic cabinet lock, note that the product page says, "Our magnetic lock is invisible and will not be seen."
An adult opens the lock from outside with a magnetic key. Baby Proof Me’s key page says, "Touch the magnet to the surface of the cabinet to disengage the lock." The product page lists 3,100 Gauss neodymium magnets with a 2-inch reach, so the key has to reach the lock from outside the door.
If your cabinet has no top frame for the latch, contact Baby Proof Me support before you mount anything.
Choose Adhesive or Screws First
Choose the mounting method first. The product page says each lock can be secured with the kit’s 3M adhesives or screwed in, and it lists 24 screws among the extras. The install video shows the adhesive mount. For a screw mount, contact Baby Proof Me support.
CPSC’s guide says safety devices must be "properly installed and reengaged after use" to be effective. It also says, "Follow installation instructions carefully."
Install steps
-
Clean and dry
Clean and dry the inside of the cabinet door and the cabinet frame. -
Load the cradle
Insert the lock into the installation cradle. -
Attach the latch
Attach the latch. -
Peel the top sticker
Peel off the top adhesive sticker. -
Place the latch
Stick the latch under the cabinet’s top frame, flush with the front edge, so it touches the door when closed. -
Remove the second sticker
Remove the second adhesive sticker. -
Close and reopen
Close and reopen the cabinet door to secure the lock. It sits inside the door near its top corner. -
Remove the cradle
Take off the cradle. -
Turn lock mode on
Push the lock tab down to turn lock mode on. -
Mark the spot
Place a clear positioning sticker over the latch area on the outside of the door to mark its location.
Once the steps are done, bring the magnetic key to the sticker to open the cabinet door. The video’s caption says to hover the magnet near the sticker.
The video turns lock mode on and tries the door straight after mounting. But the product page says, "For best results allow 24 hours for the adhesive to fully bond onto the surface." Give an adhesive-mounted lock the full 24 hours before it has to hold against a pull.
The video does not show a screw mount or how to turn lock mode off. For a screw mount, turning lock mode off, or anything else the video does not cover, contact Baby Proof Me support.
How to Install Magnetic Cabinet Locks on Drawers
Do magnetic cabinet locks work on drawers? Yes. CPSC’s guide says to use safety latches and locks "for cabinets and drawers in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas to help prevent poisonings and other injuries." The product page names "cabinets and pull-out drawers" as uses for the locks.
The install video ends on a drawer. The locked drawer stops a short way open. With the magnetic key held near the top edge of the drawer front, it opens.
A drawer install starts with the same kit, but the video does not show where the lock and latch go inside a drawer. For that, contact Baby Proof Me support.
Two checks come before you mount anything:
- Front thickness. The key reaches the lock through the drawer front. Check the thickness of the front against the product page’s 2-inch reach at the spot where the lock will sit.
- False fronts. A fixed false front that does not open has nothing to lock. Lock the drawer that pulls out.
Check the Fit
For an adhesive mount, run these checks only after the full 24 hours. Do them on every lock.
- Close the door or drawer all the way.
- Try to pull it open without the key.
- Open it from outside with the key.
- Close it fully again.
With lock mode on, the door opens a short way before the lock catches the latch, as the install video shows. Keep fingers clear of that gap while you check.
CPSC says to look for locks that are "sturdy enough to withstand pulls and tugs from children." Make closing it fully again a habit. Picture this: you push a drawer shut with your hands full, and it rests slightly ajar. CPSC also says safety devices must be reengaged after use to be effective.
If a cabinet won’t close after the child lock goes on, or the magnetic lock is not latching, do not force it. Compare your install to the video’s steps. The latch should sit under the cabinet’s top frame, flush with the front edge, so it touches the door when closed. Lock mode should be on, with the lock tab pushed down.
The product page says to stop using the product immediately if it becomes faulty. For anything else, see the "Still stuck?" block at the end of the page. It explains how to reach Baby Proof Me support with your order number and a photo of the setup.
Plan Your Locks and Protect the Keys
Start with the cabinets and drawers that hold what CPSC names. Its guide says safety latches and locks can help keep children from medicines, laundry detergent, household cleaners, matches or cigarette lighters, and knives and other sharp objects.
A lock is one layer. The AAP says safety latches that automatically lock when you close a cabinet door can help keep children away from dangerous products, "but there is always a chance the device will malfunction or the child will defeat it." The AAP also advises storing medicine, cleaning and laundry products in locked cabinets or containers, out of sight and reach. The product page warns that the product "is not a substitute for adult supervision."
The keys are magnets, and a key is what opens every lock. Store them out of children’s sight and reach. CPSC says, "Keep small magnets away from children."
CPSC also says, "If you suspect magnets have been swallowed: Seek immediate medical attention." Call 911, or Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 (America’s Poison Centers). For more, see the AAP’s HealthyChildren.org.
